Step By Step

There are a number of steps required in order for you to become a licensed motorcycle rider:

1. Get your Provisional Licence

You should apply for your Provisional Licence using a form DL1 (application for a driving licence), available from:

  • Post Office
  • DVLNI Local Vehicle Licensing Office
  • RTS Office (Larne or Belfast Office)
  • DVLNI by telephone 0845 402 4000

2. Pass your Theory Test

Theory testing offices are available in most towns in NI, and you must sit and pass this.  Most offices are open 9am-6pm Mon-Fri, plus a Saturday morning, so you should have plenty of choice.

For the address and telephone number of your local testing centre, call 0845 600 6700.

Once you pass your theory test, you have 2 years to pass your practical test, or you will have to resit and repass it.

We at RTS can help with your theory test, and give you the benefit of our experience, so give us a call.

3. Pass your Practical Test

You need to apply for your practical test using a form DL3, available from:

  • RTS Offices
  • DVLNI Theory or Practical Test Centres

Practical tests are available from 8.50am to 3.50pm Mon-Fri, though in the summer months evening tests are available for a higher fee.

For the address and telephone number of your local test centre, telephone 0845 247 2472

4. Get a Full Licence

You need to send your Test Pass Certificate, plus your photocard and paper counterpart from your Provisional Licence, and the appropriate fee to DVLNI.  Do not delay this, as if you forget and 2 years pass, you will have to resit your tests all over again.

DVLNI Address is:

Driver Licensing Division
DVLNI
County Hall
Castlerock Road
Coleraine
BT51 3TB
